Babysitting Tips – Babysitting Jobs Interview Tips
Interviews are helpful to both the parents and the potential babysitter. Before you babysit for a new family, it is important to get to know about the family (as much as you can). It gives you opportunity to ask questions and discuss the details of the babysitting arrangements and expectations. At the same time, interview provides an opportunity to the parents as well, to judge the capabilities of the babysitter they are about to hire.
Babysitting job interviews are more like an interrogation, rather than a discussion. Hence, it is easier to anticipate the questions and be prepared for the answers before hand. You being prepared for the babysitting job interview gives that extra bit of confidence about you to the parents. Typical questions, which might come up during an interview are : what is your experience, names of people who would like to give you a good recommendation, how much is your charge etc. If you do not have any experience in doing a babysitting job, you can inform about the voluntary work you’ve done, you can tell names of people who gave you good recommendations (ask people in advance, if you can use them as a reference). Your answers should always bear in mind your safety. Do not reveal too much personal information.
Some of the questions, which you can ask the parents:
- How many children will I be babysitting? What are their names and ages?
- What are the household rules? How would you like me to handle it if a child misbehaves?
- What time is bedtime and what is the bedtime routine?
- Will I be preparing any meals or snacks for the children? Are there any foods that should be avoided?
- Do the children have homework or chores to complete? If so, would you like me to help make sure these get done?
- What do you expect me to do when your child is sick and has a contagious illness?
- Do the children have any allergies or medical conditions that I should be aware of?
- Are there any pets? If so, do they need to be fed?
- What are some of the children’s favorite play activities? Do the children have any favorite stories, songs, or rituals that will help put them at ease?
- Are there any areas of the house that are off-limits or restricted?
- Would you like me to answer the phone?
- How can I reach you in case of an emergency?
- What are the hours of the babysitting job?
- How will I get to and from your home?
- Added responsibilities (if any) like doing dishes,
Think about your safety. If you don’t know about the family, say you will get back to them after you talk to your parents. You may even ask your parents to arrange a visit with the client.
You may not want to take up a babysitting job, which requires much more from your side than anticipated in the beginning. For example, some medical conditions like seizures, asthama, diabetes or hemophilia.
Personal limitations, which might affect your ability to do a good job – afraid of heights, afraid of pool/water, afraid or allergic to any animal.
